Beyond the Shingles: What’s Actually Protecting Your Home?

When most people think about a new roof, they focus on one thing: the shingles. It makes sense they are the “curb appeal” and the most visible part of the project.

However, a roof isn’t just a layer of shingles; it’s a high-performance system. If you only focus on the top layer, you’re essentially buying a waterproof jacket but leaving the zipper open.

To get a roof that actually lasts 30+ years, you have to look at what’s happening underneath:

The Decking:

The foundation. If the wood is soft or rotting, the best shingles in the world won’t stay secure.

Drip Edge:

That often-overlooked metal flashing that directs water away from your fascia and into the gutters.

Ice and Water Shield:

A heavy-duty membrane in the valleys and eaves that prevents “ice damming” from backing up into your home.

Synthetic Underlayment:

The secondary barrier that breathes while keeping moisture out.

The Ventilation System:

This is the “lungs” of your house. Without proper intake and exhaust (Intake Vents + Ridge Vents), your attic will bake your shingles from the inside out in the summer and trap damaging moisture in the winter.

The Bottom Line:

Shingles are the finishing touch, but the “invisible” layers determine whether your roof survives the next big storm or fails prematurely.

If you’re evaluating a roofing estimate, don’t just look at the shingle brand. Look at the system.
